Tedric put his own timepiece back in his pocket. “Along with countless other magical works,” he said, “your timepiece is your way of locking and unlocking doors and windows, even those you can’t see. You can even pilot your home with it, if you know how.”
Key had no idea how to do any of that. Her home had always seemed so large. She had never thought about doing anything with all those other floors and doors. She just let other Mystical Creatures live in them.
A small chime came from Tedric’s pocket. His Chrinimical Timepiece was telling him that it was time to go. “All right,” he squeaked, clapping his paws at his wife and children. “The train will be departing any moment. Let’s go. Let’s go.”
The family picked up their baggage and faced the mouse hole door.
Key began to follow them, but Tedric turned around and held up one paw. “Sometimes going through certain doors makes us smaller,” he said. “Being small isn’t all bad. Being stuck is. If you go through this door with us, you’ll stay small. And I think DIOS has other plans for you. She let you come to this place, and she wants to bring you back to where you were, and perhaps even make you a little bigger.”
Tedric pointed to the door that he and his family were about to go through.
“When this door closes, open it when you’re ready and not before. If you open it when you’re not ready, then you will not get to the place you’re going.”
“How will I know when I’m ready?” asked Key.
“Your timepiece will tell you.”
ARTH-R beeped a question.
Key gave the little robot a patient look. “Yes, it will probably tell you when it’s time for an oil bath too,” she replied, “but I’m more concerned about other matters, like how it will know when I am ready to go through this door.”
Tedric started gently pushing his family through the door into Pincushion Station.
“Has DIOS shown you she knows when you need things before you know you need them?”
Key thought about this. “Sometimes,” she admitted.
“All the time,” he corrected. “You just don’t notice. But your timepiece tells you when to notice. That’s part of its job.”
“Tedric,” the mother mouse sang out. She was already standing on the train platform with their two children. “We’re going to miss our train.”
Tedric Tinker took his toothpick cane and picked up one end of his trunk. He looked into Key’s eyes.
“Just trust DIOS,” he said to her. “She’s a mysteriously powerful operating system. She knows all your needs.”
With that, the father mouse scurried through the door and rejoined his family in the station.
The train was made of thimbles and cans, gears and cogs and springs, and many other things you might find in a watchmaker’s shop. Mouse ticket takers were punching holes in tickets and a mouse engineer was blowing a whistle, announcing, “All aboard!”
The Tinker family gave their tickets and boarded the train.
Before it left, the whole mouse family—Tedric Tinker,
